It won’t have escaped your notice (I hope) that my book, The Ladder is published at the end of February 2021 after 18 months of creative development, editing, word-wrangling and finessing, and I know it’s going to be a really useful tool for schools to use in developing the skills and capabilities of their young people.
The book is a distillation of everything we’ve been doing for the past 15 years as Innovative Enterprise, working as the Enterprise Director of National Careers Week and my thoughts and ideas which coalesced around the TEDx talk I did in 2016 – Engineering Random Opportunities to Succeed.
Now, more than ever, young people are going to need support in their future thinking – in June 2020 the World Bank issued a stark set of forecasts and warnings for the future economic prosperity of the majority of the globe, saying, ‘While the ultimate outcome is still uncertain, the pandemic will result in contractions across the vast majority of emerging market and developing economies.’ The bank predicts that ‘global coordination and cooperation will be critical’ to recovery. Their base- line forecast suggests the likelihood of a ‘5.2 percent contraction in global GDP’, which they confirm is the ‘deepest global recession in decades’. The effects of the UK’s departure from the EU is also beginning to be keenly felt across a number of industries which is sure to continue for some time – the final demise of the fishing industry looks set to arrive, a reduction of 68% in exports from the UK to the EU claimed by the Road Haulage Association and the financial exodus from the City of London will likely have a serious long term impact on UK jobs and career opportunities.
That’s why this book will be an important tool in your armoury to support young people in the coming few years and it’s not just about ‘careers’, the tools in the central toolkit, the CASK (Continuum for the Acquisition of Skills and Knowledge) will help with the aim of the book: supporting students towards successful futures and confident career choices.
As a support to you and your school staff, if your school buys more than 20 copies of the book I will deliver a free 30 minute virtual CPD / INSET session to help you get the best from the tools and techniques in the book, how to engage governors and parents in the quest and how to ask great questions of your local business community to gain their support to get your students off the best possible start in life.
